Device sniffer
The world of industrial automation has a big problem – the ever-increasing number of IoT devices that can communicate via Ethernet or bus. Do you see the problem? No? Let me help you out. When you have thousands of communicating devices inside your plants, the metadata and data of these devices become a significant risk to mitigate. First of all, you have to configure all the devices and keep track of each one. You need to check for errors and maintain backups.
Most importantly, you must utilize the provided data and metadata. By analyzing or simply having access to this data, you can easily detect upcoming defects and errors in your plant. I have proven this in the past by merely analyzing the IP configuration of drills.
You may ask, where is the value in that? Well, can you even reach these devices? If not, is your MES (Manufacturing Execution System) configured to reach them? I do not think so. So, how do you tackle these topics? Just follow conventions, right? That will not work because mistakes are human, and this is an inhuman field.
Sounds interesting?
